Yogisheart wants to make Super Bowl weekend even more super. For the third year in a row, the we are throwing the charitable event called Pregame 2016 at Flow Yoga Studio in Ho-Ho-Kus. People who attend will find inspiration, do yoga poses, eat great food, drink refreshing beer (and non-alcoholic beverages) and have so much fun. One hundred percent of ticket sales go to yogisheart, our non-profit that provides yoga to young adults who need it but otherwise could not afford to practice.

Yoga is more than just exercise. Yes, it strengthens, lengthens and stabilizes the body. But even more importantly, yoga calms the mind. Yoga has been shown to decrease depression and increase good mood. It’s a healthy, natural alternative therapy that yogisheart wants to offer to students who could reap the benefits. Every month, yogisheart gives away 1 full year of yoga classes to a deserving young person at a studio that’s convenient to her or him. Most of the recipients—they go through an application process—are in New Jersey, but yogisheart has given away these scholarships nationwide.

At this year’s Pregame, yogisheart hopes to raise $8,000, which is enough to provide about 7 scholarships in 2016. The rest of the annual income comes from donations and smaller fundraisers. Last year, more than 150 people attended the Pregame.

“Pregame is a fun and inspirational celebration where yogis from all over gather to help create scholarships that enable young adults to thrive in a very difficult time of life,” explains yogisheart co-founder Trella Dolgin. In addition to teaching yoga, she also teaches full-time at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Ridgewood.

This year’s pregame takes place on Saturday, February 6 from 6 to 10 pm.  Dolgin will begin the evening with a yogisheart update. Then, expect a fantastic and heartwarming yoga class led by Joe Gandarillas, a popular teacher with several years’ experience.  “His classes are always so welcoming, fun and they bring everyone together with a powerful message,” explains Kelly Corcoran, also a co-founder and manager at lululemon in Montclair.

So come to Pregame and know you’re doing a good thing. “These young people are desperately searching to know themselves and feel comfortable in their own skin. We see over the course of a year of practicing yoga, our scholarship recipients experience a positive shift in perspective,” Corcoran adds.
